Dealing with Hecklers
Mark 1:21-28 “Dealing with hecklers: How to respond to people who react negatively to your Christian witness and lifestyle.”
Do people sometimes have a go at you for your faith in Jesus? In today’s Gospel we see Jesus responding to a demonic heckler with authority and grace. There are lessons from this for us too. It’s helpful to think a little more deeply about what is going on at a spiritual level when people criticize you or put you down for following Jesus. Try to understand what’s prompting the heckling. Often it comes from a fear of being exposed and/or judged. Rather than destroying him (as he feared), Jesus spoke words of liberation and healing over the man with the unclean spirit. We too need to be people of grace and healing, of acceptance and compassion. Sadly, too many Christians have a reputation for being judgmental and rejecting. St Paul in Romans 12 has come helpful advice for us when facing opposition: “Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good.”

Easter Service Planning
If you would like to be involved in planning Worship services at Easter, we would love to hear from you!
You may have gifts in writing scripts, acting in a drama, selecting videos, visual art displays, playing or singing in a band … whatever you feel led to contribute.
If you feel this is your calling, please write “Easter Service Planning” on a Connect Card, or contact either Merv Thiele, Sharon Tarca or the church office.
- The circle indicates the unity we have in Christ. We are contained in his grace. We are in this journey together, not because we agree with each other, but because God has adopted every one of us into his family.
- We recognise that this path is painful. The colour palette is sage. Sage is an ancient symbol of healing.
- The end of the pathway is not defined. We do not know exactly where it will lead us, but by faith we know that God is already there ahead of us, leading us towards his light.
- The two figures represent the different views on ordination we hold in the LCANZ. Both figures have shades of light and dark; we are at once saint and sinner. Whatever view we hold about ordination, we are each a broken person and a redeemed person.
- Together we carry the cross of Christ on this journey. Together we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, our only hope, the joy of our salvation.

If you can’t get to church, you can still contribute to God’s work in the world by setting up a direct debit via Regular Electronic Giving (REG).
- REG is a convenient, safe and confidential way of giving a regular offering to your congregation.
- Your REG offering can come from your bank, credit union or LLL account.
- You can set up REG to coincide with your regular income (e.g. salary, pension, dividends) or budget: weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or even half-yearly.
- REG keeps things confidential. Your congregation doesn’t receive any information regarding your identity or the amount of your offering.
How REG benefits Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
- Provides a regular income flow, making budgeting easier.
- Can increase giving through the convenience of direct debits.
- Safer because there is less cash to handle and bank each week.
Brochures, including request forms, are available from the church office, or from the Café.
Community Family Support News
Welcome to 2024! A year of love, optimism and creativity!

Students return on Wednesday next week with our newest friends, the Foundation students, joining us the following week. We begin our year with Opening Worship at 9am on Wednesday 31st January and, of course, you are most welcome to attend (and join us for a coffee afterwards!)
Looking forward to being led by our faithful Good Shepherd as we embark on an exciting new year together as a community.
