Growing In Jesus

Growing In Jesus

It is an old adage that life is a journey. Now being on a journey implies that you have some directions on which way to go and some idea of what lies at the end destination. For some the answer to those points are ‘I’ll make my own way thanks’ and ‘My life right now is all I have, and the journey’s end is a plot of ground and a headstone’.

For followers of Jesus, he provides a different response. He tells us that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and that waiting at the end of this earthly life’s journey is a place already prepared for each of us with him. By God’s grace he has called us into his kingdom and so growing in Jesus needs to be part of everything that we do. Ultimately it means grasping onto this promise, this hope, and this eternal truth that Jesus is the only way to the Father God.

Like travelling on a journey, growing can have its setbacks. Jesus doesn’t promise that life is all smooth sailing but as we draw closer to him through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be assured that he is always with us each step of the way to that day of glory.

Join us this Sunday as Pastor Fin Klein unpacks these life-changing promises, this new way of living and growing in Jesus and all that it means.

Finance update

The following is an update on our finances for Good Shepherd Para Vista to 31st August 2023.

In the budget approved at our Half Yearly meeting in November 2022, we provided for annual offerings and donations of $450,000. To 31st August we planned to have received $262,885.

As of 31st August 2023, our donations were $251,766, a shortfall of $42,234 against our planned budget of $296,000.

The good news is that our offerings have increased in June and July to help bring us back to a balanced budget for the year to date.  The not so good news is that our giving dropped off in August leading to our increased shortfall.  As we have not yet been able to secure a pastor nor employ a planned lay worker our year-to-date expenditure is down on the budget plan.

Thank you to all those who have prayerfully reviewed their giving and increased their commitment.

Churchwide Call to Prayer

Our LCANZ bishops are calling the people of the church to set aside 2023 for a churchwide day of prayer focusing on the unity of the church. This is a significant day as it is just a year from the 2024 Convention of General Synod.

At the in-person sessions of the 2021–23 Convention of General Synod, the General Church Board and College of Bishops were asked to consider possible ways forward in the decades-long ordination debate. The Way Forward project is working to develop a framework whereby the LCANZ could function as one church with two different practices of ordination. It is intended that this proposal will be brought to the 2024 Convention of General Synod, 4–7 October 2024.

Operation Christmas Child

Shoe boxes can be retuned on Sundays and left in the foyer on one of the high tables or delivered to the church office during office hours. All boxes need to be returned no later than Sunday 22nd October as they will be delivered to the distribution Centre on Monday 23rd October.

Spill Kits

Reminder two spill kits are available for use in emergency cases where someone has vomited or perhaps become incontinent resulting in involuntary soiling of an area. The kits are in a black bucket with ‘Spill Kit” clearly marked in white on the bucket and lid.  Buckets are located in the ladies’ air locker first cupboard to the right on entry and in the very rear store wooden shelving on the left behind the kitchen.  Please notify the office if you have used one of the kits so they can be replenished and returned to use.

Community Family Support News

Growing Faith at Home

The title of this week’s GFH resource is ‘God is amazingly generous.’ Have you ever had a ‘double take’ when you received a generous gift that you felt was undeserved? How did you feel about it? I’m wondering if your attention changed from the gift to the gift giver. Have a look at this week’s GFH edition for some things to talk about and perhaps even do as a small group or in your family.

KAPS – 2 Sleeps to go!

Our next KAPS event is just around the corner… and we are going on a bear scavenger hunt! It’s going to be lots of fun and we would love for you to be a part of it. Bring your children or your grandchildren! There is also something for older people too. Students from Years 7-12 are invited to join in with some Youth games. (So… if you know anyone in this age group, share the news!) Everyone is then invited to join in with worship and dinner. Hoping to see you soon!

School Snippets

Ms. Bethany McAleer, our Performing Arts teacher, is busily preparing our Stage 1 and 2 children (Foundation to Year 2 students) for our JP Showcase next week ‘Seussical Kids’. We have many excited children eagerly preparing for their moment up on stage.  If you would like to find out more of what is happening at school, you are also welcome to click on the link to our newsletter: https://inewsletter.co/J1WDLx/latest A printed copy is available in the café area, and I am happy to arrange your own copy if you would like!

Worship

One of our school staff members, Mrs. Colalancia, shared part of her faith story at Worship on Wednesday. You will be able to see the video recording by clicking on the link in this week’s devotion. Next week we hear from a past student, who will share part of her faith walk with us.  Please note: Next week we will be having our Worship on Friday 29th September as we like to close our school term in this way. We would love for you to join us for both Worship and coffee next week. Same starting time… 8:50am… Just a different day!   Love to see you!
